UPCOMING EXHIBITIONS

2010

FEBRUARY 19, 2010 - April 16, 2010

IT’S ALL A BLUR

In today's world of sound bites and hyperactive over-stimulation it is not surprising that things often appears as one big blur. Decades ago, Gerhard Richter blurred his images because he recognized the uncertainty and inconsistency inherent in his fast-paced society. Many artworks today are also indistinct and vague - perhaps also referencing the uncertainty of our “New York Minute” existence -- or perhaps it is the blur that is the true depiction, indicating that, if anything, clarity today is only an illusion. If we take our time and really look at these works we might understand why these blurred images are perhaps the clearest depictions possible in our culture today. The artists participating are Bill Armstrong, Joe Begonia, Julian Jackson, Andi Monick, James Osher, Tracy Rocca, Alexandra Pacula, James Woodruff, and Marc Yancus.

NATURE CALLS
Reception: Sunday, July 11th, 3-6pm. Curated by D. Dominick Lombardi.

When an artist enters their studio they are entering a sanctuary of sorts, where thoughts and experiences can be turned into anything from extended realities, to alternate planes, to pure fantasy.  But it’s all grounded somehow, as most share the common experience of day dreaming.

THE SUM OF THEIR PARTS
Reception:  Sunday, September 12, 3-6pm

Art history is full of composite creatures - the Chimaera, theSphinx, the Griffins, Pan, the Minotaur, the Mermaid, Pegasus, Medussa, the Satyr, the Centaur,-- and the list goes on and on. The idea of this creature from mythology and fantasy is rapidly become more plausible with advancements in genetic engineering. This show investigates how artists today interpret and address the idea of creatures that are the sum of some quite different parts.

STRING THEORY
Reception: Sunday, December 5th, 3-6pm

Many artists today appear to be adopting a reductivist simplicity in their approach to artmaking. Some reduce the artistic element to a basic line (usually string) by “drawing” both within planes (2D) and in Space (3D) to produce works that are often far from simple or minimal.  While others are reducing the material – to string.  The resultant piece might be quite complex, but the material could not get more basic. In this hi-tech culture with continual advancements in artist’s medias is this minimal and often temporary approach a retaliation? another element of the apparent Arte Povera resurgence? Is it a new regurgitation of the hi/low, domestic/industrial, craft/art dichotomy? Or something else?

MATERNALISM
Reception:  Sunday, December 5th, 3-6 pm.

From the medieval Madonna tradition to more contemporary interpretations by Constantine Brancusi, Henri Moore, Dorothea Lange, Keith Haring, Louise Bourgeois, and many others, it seems the subject of the mother & child has always been a central topic in Western art. Today we see continual moral debates about birth planning and fertility procedures, as well as a cultural obsession with the mothers like the Kate (of “John & Kate . .) and the  “Octomom”.  It seems that motherhood will probably always remain a source of strong opinions, deep admiration, and quizzical fascination. We will explore how this noble theme is interpreted by contemporary artists such as Janine Antoni, Edith Maybin, Nina Levi, Charles Pfahl, Patricia Piccinini, and many others.
