ABOUT MAIZA HIXSON

Maiza Hixson is the Gretchen Hupfel Curator of Contemporary Art at the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts (DCCA). She is also founder of the SHAFT Space with Lauren Ruth. Hixson has extensive museum and curatorial experience, having worked for the Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia as well as serving as associate curator of the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati and curatorial fellow in the Contemporary Art Department at the J.B. Speed Art Museum in Louisville, KY. Her curatorial work was recently featured in the People’s Biennial, a nationally traveling exhibition organized by Independent Curators International and curated by Jens Hoffman and Harrell Fletcher. She has curated such exhibitions as: Young Country: Rural Themes in Contemporary Art, and Masters of the Visual Universe: An M.F.A. Biennial. She organized solo exhibitions on artists Marilyn Minter and C. Spencer Yeh and curated American Idyll: Contemporary Art, Karaoke; Oh Boy! Men and Masculinity;and Curatorial Investigations of the Mutant Sublime.

Hixson organized a solo show on two Philadelphia-based artists, The Dufala Brothers, as well as a thematic group exhibition on interactive, new media devices in contemporary art titled Contraption. Hixson's 2013-2014 exhibition program, Radical Participation: A Series of Four Interactive Exhibitions was recently funded by the Warhol Foundation and will be implemented at the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts.

Eligible Work

SICA, The Shore Institute of the Contemporary Arts, is seeking contemporary artwork in all medias for inclusion in our 8th Annual International Juried Exhibition.  The exhibition is open to all visual artists in all mediums, for works that have been completed in the past 5 years and that has never been displayed at SICA. Each artist may enter as many ORIGINAL pieces for consideration as they wish. ONLY one digital image can be submitted for each work of art, except for sculpture or installation where 2 views of each submission are allowed.

2-Dimensional works may not exceed 100” in height by 100” in width (excluding the frame) and must be “show ready,” – totally ready for hanging. Three-dimensional works must not exceed 7' in height, nor cover more than 50 square feet of floor area, or weigh more than 300 lbs. Installations are welcome but must not exceed 100 square feet of floor space. Accepted artworks cannot be substituted and are committed for the duration of the exhibit. No artwork shall be returned after installation until the final exhibition date, and artwork will be returned only to the original location and lender or his/her authorized agent on the date(s) stated herein. SICA reserves the right to rejected any accepted works that we feel differ significantly from the submitted image. SICA also reserves the right to reproduced exhibited artwork for all media and publications.

All works of art will be insured while on SICA's premises.

Submissions - The deadline for submissions is extended to OCTOBER 13, 2012.

Entry fee is only $30.00 ($35 for non-members). This fee includes insurance and handling fees for the submission of 2 different works of art (1 image per work) and is non-refundable. Three-dimensional entries may submit two images for each entry. You may also submit more entries for an additional $10 per entry. Juried selections will be made from digital images only. All submissions must be digital and submitted through our website: www.sica.org. No images sent via email or mailed to us on discs will be accepted. All images should jpegs only, and have a resolution which is no larger than 300 dpi and a maximum size of 1200 pixels in any direction. Any works not meeting these criterias can not be accepted.

IMPORTANT - Improperly labeled images can not be accepted.  All entries must be labeled according to these specification: last name_first name entry number.jpg[For instance: Smith_Will1.jpg,   or Doe_John2.jpg]

 

Jurying Process

Juried screening will be made digital images ONLY. Any entry not meeting the restrictions listed in "Submissions" above will not be accepted for jurying. No work selected for inclusion in this exhibition and shipped to us will be accepted unless all return costs, necessary labels documentation and shipping insurance is included by the artist. Alll worksshipped to us must be shipped using a reliable shipping agent (UPS, FedEx, etc.). Items shipped through the US Postal Service (USPS) will NOT be accepted.

Awards and Sales

SICA will do it's best to have awards presented at the Reception for Best in Show, Best in Category (Painting, Sculpture, Photography, Printmaking, Best Mixed Media / Installation, etc.), and Director’s Choice Award. The awards and award categories, however, are the choice of the Juror, and can not be guaranteed by SICA.

SICA request a 25% donation for any works sold as a direct result of this exhibition. Purchaser(s) cannot take possession of art until after the close of the exhibition.
