WHAT’S INTAGLIO? Intaglio is a printmaking technique in which the image is incised into a surface, known as the matrix or plate. Normally, copper or zinc plates are used as a surface, and the incisions are created by etching, engraving, drypoint, aquatint or mezzotint. Intaglio was fi rst used around 1480, the drypoint technique attained its apogee in Rembrandt’s work. A few of the masters of drypoint in the 20th Century were Edvard Munch, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Max Beckmann, Pablo Picasso, and Salvador Dali. |
