Many artists today appear to be adopting a reductive simplicity in their approach to making art. Some reduce the visual elements to a basic line by “drawing” within planes (2D) or in Space (3D) to produce works that are often far from simple or minimal. Others artists are reducing their materials to bare minimum, such as string, wire or thread. The resultant piece might be quite complex, but the material could not get more basic. Is this minimal and often temporary approach to art-making a retaliation to our hi-tech culture with its emphasis on digital Medias? Is it just another element of the current Arte Povera resurgence? Perhaps it is a resurfacing of those ever combative dichotomies -- hi/low, domestic/industrial, craft/fine art? . . . or perhaps even something else?
